Valentine’s Day: A Celebration of God’s Love

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to not only celebrate love with those around us but also to reflect on the greatest love of all—God’s unconditional and sacrificial love through Jesus Christ. As we express love to others, may we remember that true love is selfless, rooted in Christ’s example, and calls us to reflect His character in our relationships.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, many of us are reminded of the love we share with family, friends, and significant others. The world often associates this day with romantic love, flowers, chocolates, and heartfelt expressions of affection. For us as Seventh-Day Adventists, Valentine’s Day can serve as an opportunity to reflect not only on human relationships but on the greatest love of all—the love that God has for each of us.

In the Bible, 1 John 4:9-10 says: “This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” God’s love is unconditional, sacrificial, and eternal. On this special day, while we may give tokens of affection to those around us, let us also pause and remember the incomparable love that God demonstrated through Jesus Christ.

The essence of true love is found in selflessness and service, which we see fully embodied in Christ. In John 15:13, Jesus himself tells us, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” The ultimate act of love was not in lavish gifts or romantic gestures but in the ultimate sacrifice—the laying down of his life for us. This is a love that calls us to reflect his character in our relationships with others.

This Valentine’s Day, we can take time to express our love for God in tangible ways. It may be through prayer, worship, or service to others. As we show love to the people in our lives, let’s also remember that true love is sacrificial and rooted in the love Christ has shown us. Our relationships, whether with family, friends, or spouses, should reflect that same selfless, unconditional love.

Let this day serve as a reminder of how loved we are by God. No matter our circumstances, His love is always there for us—steadfast, unwavering, and eternal. As we give and receive love today, may we be drawn closer to the One who first loved us.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the immeasurable love you have shown us through your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to reflect your love in our relationships and live selflessly as you have demonstrated. On this Valentine’s Day, may we remember the true meaning of love and share that love with those around us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
